The Engadin Ski Marathon and its history

The 1st Engadin Ski Marathon was held in March 1969. A total of 945 skiers registered on that occasion, an auspicious, indeed unexpected start for the very first race! Back then even the greatest optimist would not have believed that 12,000 skiers would ever line up for the start of the Ski Marathon.

The introduction of a half marathon will open up the Engadin Ski Marathon to a wider public. Those taking part in the half marathon will start at the same time as those in the marathon in Maloja and ski on the original stretch as far as Pontresina (21 km), the marathon itself going from Maloja to S-chanf (42 km).

Did you know that...

...4 per cent of all participants come a cropper in the notorious Stazerwald section? So, for those who enjoy the spectacle of others’ misfortune, that’s about 500 tumbles.

...the oldest male participant is 96 and the oldest female 81 years old?

...each participant travels an average of 209 km to and from the Engadin?

...each participant produces an average of 290 g of litter on race day?

...a cross-country skier expends 900 calories per hour?

...6000 Max Havelaar bananas are handed out by the 500 volunteer helpers at seven stations?
