Engadine - THEY KEEP ON CALLING

The title of the exhibition refers to the famous phrase of the naturalist John Muir (1838-1914): "The mountains are calling and I must go". Today, this quote is often used to describe the special attraction of the mountains. In his work, Mandry also examines the iconography of the mountain world from different perspectives.

Description

The exhibition will be shown at the Forum Paracelsus in St. Moritz from 05 - 26 February 2022.

In this exhibition, Douglas Mandry explores the Engadine as an iconic place.

Tracing the special aura of the region, the artist uses historical and his own visual material and incorporates elements of nature as well as scientific data into his artistic work.
The result is a surprisingly diverse series of works that combines aesthetic as well as experimental approaches.

The title of the exhibition refers to the famous phrase of the naturalist John Muir (1838-1914): "The mountains are calling and I must go".
Today, this quote is often used to describe the special attraction of the mountains. Mandry's work also explores the iconography of the mountain world from different perspectives.

For his "Monuments" series, Mandry prints used glacier cloths with historical photographs of Engadine glaciers from the early 20th century. The cloth, which already shows traces after a summer on the ice, is printed using the traditional technique of lithography. The images are reminiscent of the golden age of tourism and testify to the technological attempt to preserve a landscape that will cease to exist in the foreseeable future.
In the series "Unseen Sights," Mandry transforms his photographs of Engadine mountain and lake landscapes into atmospheric visions through collage technique and painting. Light, color and form: Mandry plays on the keyboard of visual features of the Engadine by quoting, amplifying and alienating. In this way, he simultaneously serves and questions our visual expectations shaped by painting and photography.

The exhibition will also be shown in Zurich from March 03 to April 02, 2022.
