Gallery Engadin St. Moritz
Exhibition «Ski Runs & Champagne Dreams»
The latest exhibition at the St. Moritz Design Gallery in the Serletta car park is a collaboration between St. Moritz and Magnum Photos. From 3 December 2021 until May 2022, the gallery will display 31 images by renowned Magnum photographers.
The St. Moritz Design Gallery, located along the pedestrian passage from Badrutt’s Palace Hotel down to the lake, is home to 31 large, built-in illuminated frames, which are host to changing exhibitions of important posters and photographs. This winter season, visitors can look forward to a special exhibition created in collaboration with the renowned photo agency Magnum Photos. Under the title «Ski Runs & Champagne Dreams», this exhibit will feature images from photographers Werner Bischof, Rene Burri, Burt Glinn, Thomas Hoepker, Martin Parr, Paolo Pellegrin and Alex Majoli. Together and across generations, the 31 visual short stories create a remarkably beautiful, cheerful and sometimes poetic portrait of life in the birthplace of winter tourism.
From Bischof to Glinn
The photographic journey through time begins in the late 1940s with ski pictures by Swiss photographer Werner Bischof. These are followed by photographs from the late 1950s and onwards from American photographer Burt Glinn, who truly knew how to capture social life in St. Moritz. These include a photograph of Arturo Lopez’s butler loading bottles of champagne onto his boss's private plane and an image of the American gossip columnist Elsa Maxwell being crowned «Queen of the glamour girls» in the Corviglia Club. A Glinn photo from 1959 in Badrutt’s Palace Hotel was chosen as the cover photo for the exhibition as well. Taken in 1959 at Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, it shows a woman lying in bed enjoying a massage while drinking and smoking. The picture is the epitome of the extravagance that sets St. Moritz apart.
And Hoepker to Majoli
After Glinn, the German photographer Thomas Hoepker shows up with a powerful picture from 1965: well-known industrialist, photographer and playboy Gunter Sachs waiting for his next descent on the Cresta Run. Hoepker is followed by Rene Burri from Switzerland, who adds a sporty note with photographs of the Engadin Ski Marathon. Then comes a big change of scenery with Martin Parr's pictures of skiers on Corviglia that exude his characteristically personal, humorous and anthropological view of everyday situations. The exhibit concludes in a calm and idyllic way with photographs of nature by Italians Paolo Pellegrin and Alex Majoli. The exhibition has been curated by Melody Gygax.
