In the mountain village of Tenna in Safiental, a solar ski lift was put into operation at the start of winter 2011/2012. This is the world's first solar-powered winter sports facility.

Description

"Small but mighty" is probably the right description for the ski lift in Tenna in Safiental. The ski lift is just 450 meters long. It transports snow sports enthusiasts and produces solar power at the same time. Ski lift and solar system in one - presenting a sensible double benefit. This innovative idea came about because the old ski lift had become obsolete after 41 years of operation. The solar ski lift has become a popular attraction for the region's residents and guests.

It is estimated that the solar system on the ski lift generates 21% more electricity than a conventional system on a roof. Why? The efficiency of photovoltaic cells is highest when the sun shines vertically on them. The solar modules on the ski lift have an ideal south-facing inclination of 30% as they are aligned uniaxially to the position of the sun during the day. This is possible thanks to a cable construction with a traction cable. The solar system produces around 90,000 kWh per year. Around 22,000 kWh are required to operate the ski lift. The surplus solar energy is sold to EW Safiental. Interested parties and the environmentally conscious can purchase solar power from Tenna there.
