### History
Surlej was almost completely destroyed by flooding of the "Ova da Surlej" stream in 1793 and 1868. Subsequently, a dam was built in 1873, and the stream was diverted through an 80-meter-long rock tunnel with a diameter of 3 meters to Lake Silvaplana. This created the waterfall, visible from afar, and Surlej has been spared from flooding ever since.
