Based on the best-selling novel by Delia Owens, the film tells the story of Kya, who is abandoned by her parents as a young girl. In the dangerous swamps of North Carolina, she raises herself alone and develops into a perceptive and tough young woman. For years, rumours about the "march girl" haunted the nearby village of Barkley Cove and excluded her from the community. When Kya is attracted to two young men from the city, a new, amazing world opens up for her. But when one of them is found dead, the community immediately sees Kya as the prime suspect.
