Rehabilitation of the Wergenstein–Mathon cantonal road: dealing with natural hazards

In 1926, the cantonal road from Mathon to Wergenstein was built. The slope in the Valtschiel has always been in motion, which is not uncommon in a mountain canton. In the summer of 2022, however, a section of road had finally said goodbye. For several months, a provisional solution was worked on at full speed so that Wergenstein could also be reached in winter.

In the lecture on road infrastructure and natural hazards, a geologist, a project manager and a construction manager from the Graubünden Civil Engineering Office will show how the slide at Wergenstein occurred, how the road was provisionally made passable again and what long-term solutions are planned. The project insight is supplemented by an on-site inspection.
