Those who want to visit the National Park region between the Lower Engadine and the Val Müstair do so quite deliberately. It lies concealed and isolated in the southernmost tip of Switzerland, even if the Vereina Tunnel now makes access a little easier.

 Hikers enjoy a ramble through a natural world full of variety and romantic beauty that is very hard to beat. Mountain trails cut into the rocks of the Uinaschlucht gorge contrast with tranquil valley walks in the Val Müstair, steep ascents into the wild Val Cluozza contrast with gentle strolls through the Val Mora, larch forests between Zernez and Lavin contrast with turquoise mountain lakes on the Sesvennapass. You repeatedly touch on the Swiss National Park region – when it gets steep and wild, when you can’t leave the trail and resting places are clearly fenced in with thick posts.

 But this route also offers several top highlights in cultural terms. One is undoubtedly the St.Johann zu Müstair Monastery, which has the status of a UNESCO World Heritage. Another is the beautifully decorated Engadine villages with painted detailing on the stone-built houses and typical set-back windows. When these widows reflect the golden larch trees in autumn, the idyll is picture-postcard perfect.
