Description

Already after a short stretch there is a first purple-flowering meadow, whose scent seems to linger in the air: numerous carnation species. Shortly afterwards, the first stands of the massive Alpine Mountain Thistle with their large, purple flower heads appear. Past old Maiensässhütten (seasonal mountain huts), the path soon becomes solitary and leads through former wild hay meadows, where a good dozen plant species in violet variations compete for the favor of bees and butterflies, including the purple shiny scabious. The floral display is impressive, as is the steepness of the slopes. The management of these remote mountain meadows was gradually abandoned until the early seventies and now lies fallow.
A project by Pro Natura Graubünden aims to mow them regularly again to promote the original diversity. At the highest point of the hike, at 2100 meters, the violet-blue flowering ladder to heaven grows; further down in the tall herb zone near the Starlera Maiensäss, you find the clipped broomrape with its violet-tinged leaves and the violet-blue flowering Scheuchzer's rampion.

Possible trail closures/restrictions or detours can be found here.

Hidden Gem

The app's data volume is very large (almost 1.5 GB) and you can only download it as a whole (with all maps, photos, information, etc.) to your device. Once the app is fully installed, it works offline. During the walk, only the location function needs to be activated, which does not use any data from the smartphone or tablet.

Safety Note

Good to know:
The narrow path is often steep and exposed and requires good surefootedness. Hiking is not recommended in wet weather due to risk of slipping. Not stroller-friendly and not suitable for children!

Equipment

Smartphone, good hiking boots, provisions, especially enough to drink.
