Description

The Acquafraggia torrent and the famous waterfalls above Borgonuovo spring from a beautiful lake at 2043 m above sea level. On the hike there, you pass the village of Savogno and the more shallow part of the Valle dell'Acqua Fraggia. From about 1400 m the steep ascent begins, which also involves crossing some gravel fields, before the view of the lake opens up from the cirque threshold (2080 m). On the other side of the lake are the huts of Lago Dentro, which can be reached by walking around the lake to the right or left. Don't miss a detour to the small Piangesca Lake - with very clear water - and the pastureland of the same name, just a few minutes' walk to the west.
From the lake, you can hike back down along the same route or try out various circular hikes, but all of them are rather demanding in terms of endurance.

Directions

The hike begins at the highest house in Serlone. Follow the steps of the beautiful mule track to Savogno (932 m, about 1.30 h). From here, follow the path into the Valle dell' Acqua Fraggia until you reach the small chapel at Sant'Antonio (1200 m), located at the beginning of a long flat stretch of path called Alpigia. Further ahead, a bridge crosses the Acqua Fraggia to the other slope, where you climb up over steep grassy slopes and traverse below a small waterfall. At the next bend, the path crosses to the north-northeast towards the mountain huts of Ponciagna (1816 m), where the Corbia route joins from the left. Over a final slope you reach the cirque threshold, behind which the Acquafraggia lake (2043 m) appears.
