Schanfigger Höhenweg: Stage 4

Details
Description
The fourth stage begins with a steep ascent to Strelapass. After a flat section along the rock path, there is a one-hour ascent to the watershed. Then you have overcome the elevation and the rest of the route can be completed comfortably. The panoramic view of the Prättigau is breathtaking. The contrast between the barren ski area and the beautiful Fondei is impressive. "Hardly any high valley in the Alps has such a well-preserved Walser cultural landscape. Sunburnt wooden houses lie scattered in blooming mountain meadows. A picture that probably applied for centuries to many Walser areas. Unlike many Walser settlements, the Fondei was verifiably inhabited year-round for 600 years with a population of up to over two hundred people. Only with the expansion of transport routes and the removal of hay carriers at the end of the 19th century did the valley depopulate." (Mettier-Heinrich, High Valley Fondei).
