Trail da la Duana
Long and demanding route from Casaccia through the Val Maroz over the Duana Pass and back down to Soglio
Details
Description
Ascent through the Val Maroz up to Alp Maroz Dent and from there steeply southwest up the slope into the Val da la Duana. In the plain, we pass two small mountain lakes before the path rises again to the pass. At the top, a magnificent view opens towards Bondasca and down into Bergell. The view accompanies us also during the descent to Soglio (about 1500 meters of altitude). With a bit of luck, there is still an open restaurant in Soglio for a well-deserved after-work beer or a strengthening dinner.
Hidden Gem
For a greater altitude difference, the trail can also be hiked in the opposite direction.
Equipment
Good shoes, enough water
Directions
From Casaccia - parking lot at the small cemetery - follow the forest road, which winds upwards in curves to the entrance of the Val Maroz. The footpath takes a more direct course and repeatedly cuts across the road, reconnecting with it on the flat section above.
Past the turnoff to the Septimer Pass and the huts of Maroz Dora (1799 m), the wide path leads to Maroz Dent (2035 m). Here it descends a bit and crosses the Maira stream on a wooden bridge. At the junction on the other side of the stream, we follow the path to the right, heading west along the Maira. About one km later, the steep ascent begins, leading us about 500 meters up to the saddle before the Val da la Duana. Here, the unmarked route to Piz Duan branches off to the left.
Our path leads us past the Lӓgh da la Duana on the right, through the flat valley further to a second small mountain lake from which the Maira springs. From here, the trail rises about 400 meters more until we reach the Pass da la Duana (2697 m).
The steep descent takes us to the huts of Cadrin (2136 m), where the path from Val da Cam joins us. Over a beautiful mule track, it goes through the forest and over clearings to the terraces Plӓn West (1822 m) and Tombal until the final descent to Soglio (1090 m).
