Description

The trail run to the Palfries mountain station offers an unforgettable nature experience while demanding endurance and concentration. On natural roads and forest paths, it goes through woods, along distinctive rock passages, and past impressive rock walls. Especially the steep climb via the Hinterspinaweg requires fitness but rewards with breathtaking views.

After the demanding section, the landscape opens to lush meadows farmed by farmers. The tranquility and originality of the surroundings create a unique atmosphere that invites you to breathe deeply. In the last section, the trail leads over idyllic alpine pastures to the Palfries mountain inn where you can enjoy a well-deserved break and refresh yourself with regional delicacies.

The cable car mountain station is only a moderate climb away. Once at the top, an impressive panorama of the region’s peaks and valleys opens up. The return trip with the cable car offers the opportunity to end the route relaxed and reflect on the impressions once again.

Hidden Gem

This trail running route offers experienced runners who want to improve their coordination, fitness, and endurance on demanding paths as much as outdoor enthusiasts who want to fully enjoy the alpine scenery. Experience both: up by your own power and down with the cable car!

Safety Note

After winter or with slight snow residues it is advised not to use the route via Hinterspina. Snowmelt can cause rockfall, and the steep terrain can become dangerously slippery.

Equipment

Normal trail running equipment (good trail shoes recommended), weather-appropriate and durable clothing in layers, if applicable telescopic poles, sun and rain protection. Bring enough provisions and drinks (self-catering principle). Maps and mobile phone with good reception.

Directions

The trail run route starts at the valley station of the Palfries cable car and leads over natural roads and forest paths to the hamlet of Oberragnatsch. It continues to Heiligkreuz up to the intersection of Kürschnengasse, Tscherfingergasse, and Erzweg. There we follow the Erzweg, which later branches off into the Hinterspinaweg, beginning at 564 m above sea level. Over the steep Hinterspinaweg, the route takes us through the wonderful forest, past the Balmenwand, to Cholgrueb.

In the most challenging section of the trail, we ascend through dense woods and along distinctive rock passages. The steep climb requires endurance and concentration, but the surrounding landscape and the view make up for the effort. Afterwards, we reach Hinterspinagut onto a large meadow farmed by farmers. We pass the mountain farms Hinterspina and cross open forests before passing under the cable car route. From there, trail markers (red-white-red) are painted through Tschuggenwald to the Palfries mountain inn. The last section mostly runs over alpine pastures and finally leads us to the Palfries mountain inn. From there it is only a short, moderate climb to the cable car mountain station. Once there, we can relax and enjoy the view of the mountains and valleys, and the cable car then brings us comfortably and without further effort back to the valley.
