Description

The route can be done from the valley floor in one day, or from the Savogno hut, but it remains a very long hike reserved for good hikers. With a short ascent from the pass you can also climb to the top of Pizzo Alto (2475 m). Even though it is not very high, this stand-alone peak offers a beautiful view, especially to the south, where a rocky slope of 2000 meters reaches down to Piuro. From the village of Avero you have the choice of either continuing to the terrace of Bondeno or descending directly to Cimaganda, which will take you to splügenstrasse and the corresponding public transport, which simplifies the way back to the starting point.

Directions

You can get to Lake Acquafraggia from Borgonuovo di Piuro or described by Savogno. On the southwestern shore of the lake, the hike begins towards the west and reaches the shores of the picturesque Piangesca lake, located in front of the pasture of the same name (2098 m). Without following the path to the Passo di Lei, which continues behind the huts, you walk over the alp, keeping to the left. Afterwards you climb along a small gorge and then over a ridge that leads to a protrusion at an altitude of 2384 m. On an inclined course you cross the steep, south-exposed meadows. Later you pass above the huts of Carmezzano (2121 m) and on a last short incline you reach the Passo d'Avero (2332 m). The ascent to Pizzo Alto: From the pass, the path leads to the west, always following the striking mountain ridge. The path is pleasant, through lean pastures, and only at the end some rocks appear. In this way you can easily reach the summit at 2475 m. The descent is on the same path back to the Pass d'Avero.
From the pass you descend straight (to the northwest) to the middle of the valley by approaching the clearly visible and densely packed hut crowd of Avero (1678 m). After the settlement you can choose, either right to the terrace of Bondeno or left follow the path that leads along the forest edge of the valley to Dalò, then Chiavenna (4 hours from Avero to Chiavenna). It is advisable to continue down in the middle of the valley to the beautiful, old wooden huts of Zoccane, then continue on the path along the steep side of the valley on the right in the direction of the river. You will then reach a viewpoint with a clearly visible cross. From here you descend directly to the village of Cimagranda and reach the main road to the Splügen Pass.
