Muntada S-charl
A Gravel bike tour into another world: Steep slopes wind from Scuol up to the old miners’ settlement S-charl. But the climb soon gets gentler on the gravel – and the surroundings are heavenly. Along the rough gravel bed of the meandering Clemgia, the mountain track leads almost to the highest Swiss stone pine forest in Europe, the God da Tamangur.

Description

The starting point is the sun blessed Scuol in the lower Engadin (1,243 MASL) nestling amongst the imposing mountains. Following Mountainbike Route No. 1, you start with a short descent down to the Inn (1,211 MASL). Then it starts in earnest. The climb towards the summer village of S-charl starts in forest with a few steep inclines. The surface here is still asphalt and the height is soon gained. After a height gain of about 300 metres, you can take a breather and freewheel a little thanks to a short intermediate descent. Shortly afterwards, the forest lightens at Sasstaglia (1,563 MASL) and the view opens up into the valley. Below to the right, you can see right into the gorge of the river Clemgia, which you follow through the mighty boulder-strewn canyon along the border of the national park to S-charl. The surface now changes from asphalt to gravel– it gets more adventurous. The road snakes narrowly and windily into the valley and the countryside gets ever wilder. Nestling between high mountain peaks, the route climbs gently but continuously, sprinkled intermittently with short, steep inclines. At 1,808 MASL is the village of S-charl, one of the most isolated in Switzerland which was inhabited all year round even until 1920. A well with cold spring water and restaurants now tempt you to stay a while here at the back of the valley with a grandiose panorama. The canyon-like valley is so beautiful that you can look forward to taking the same road back. Back in Scuol, the «Bogn Engiadina Scuol» thermal spa invites you to come and relax. There are 20 mineral spas in the immediate vicinity of Scuol which also feed various wells in the village.
