Burgruine Belfort

The fortress serves the Barons of Vaz as a new, noble ancestral seat. This noble family eventually becomes more and more powerful, even competing with the bishops of Chur. And soon the Barons of Vaz were expanding their new castle: the south wing was extended and given a large, representative rectangular hall.The Vazers resided on Belfort for a good century, then the noble line died out. The castle now reaches Habsburg Austria via detours – and was destroyed by the Grisons in 1499. Today, new life is flourishing in the ruins, which are located on the Brienz/Brienzauls Cultural Trail: various herbs grow in a carefully tended garden. The garden and the castle can be discovered on guided excursions or independently.
