Hahnensee-Trail
The trail, the view and, for sure, the fail – in mountain biking, everything seems to be #epic. But what does “epic” actually mean? In order to find an answer, we set out to ride the Hahnensee trail in the Engadine.

Description

The starting point of the tour is St. Moritz Bad, from where you take the first meters on the main road towards Champfèr, but soon turn left to the former ski jumping facility (Schanzenareal). On a gravel road you now climb up to the small Lej Nair and get to Surlej in this way. If you are riding early in the morning or late in the afternoon, take the Corvatsch gondola to Murtèl (bike transport only possible on the first and last connection of the day). Otherwise you have to rely on your own muscle strength. Therefore, you climb on a gravel road to Margun Surlej, where the ascent becomes mercilessly steep for a while. This gravel road leads up to Fuorcla Surlej, the culmination of the Hahnensee Tour. The panorama of the Bernina Group from here is simply breathtaking. The descent then leads a few metres over singletrails along the ascent route, with the Hahnensee trail soon branching off to the right. This is challenging but very fun to ride for good mountainbikers – but above all offers a backdrop that is second to none. The view of the Upper Engadine lakes is nowhere better than here! The trail leads steeply down to the Hahnensee (Rhaeto-Romanic: Lej dals Chöds), then becomes a bit flatter to lead directly down to St. Moritz Bad at the fork at Gianda Naira.

Geheimtipp

This tour is very demanding and only drivable for very good mountain bikers – although there are also some places where you have to descend.

Restaurant tips along the way:

  • Mountain house Fuorcla Surlej
  • Restaurant Hahnensee / Lej dals Chöds
