Before the witch hunt in the Middle Ages, the witches are said to have celebrated their "excursions" here and operated all sorts of humbug. In 1616, the choir of the old chapel was demolished and replaced by the current building. Hans Jakob Greutter from Brixen in South Tyrol was commissioned to paint it completely. It was not until 1926 that the original paintings, which had been whitewashed over at an unknown date, were discovered.

The Greina is one of the most beautiful and largest plateaus in Switzerland. It is about six kilometers long and one kilometer wide and lies at 2200 meters above sea level. The Greina plain connects the three valleys Val Lumnezia, Val Sumvitg and Valle di Blenio.
