Segantini 19: Le cattive madri – Die bösen Mütter, 1894
The picture refers to the poem «Nirvana» by Luigi Illica. Segantini painted it at the Lai Tigiel above Alp Tussagn on the opposite side of the valley. He may also have been inspired by the figures in the ceiling painting in the church of Son Martegn.

At today's Stradung 28 once lived government councillor Franz Peterelli. He campaigned for a residence permit for Segantini, who was stateless due to a lack of papers, and together with Viktor Pianta he vouched for the Segantini family.
