Cyclists with no fear of heights will encounter one of the most beautiful railway routes in the world on the way up to the Bernina Pass. The trains of the Rhaetian Railway have to negotiate gradients of up to 70 per mille. Deep gorges and rugged rock monuments rub shoulders on this tour, which links the Engadine with the Val Poschiavo and the Valtellina. High points of the tour include Lago Bianco to the south of the pass, a reservoir at the Bernina Pass fed by glacier water and sand, and a view of the icy landscape of the Morteratsch Glacier. Those wanting to enjoy magnificent vistas can also make a side trip with the cable railway up the Diavolezza, the 2,978-mamsl summit above Pontresina.
