Details
Description
Right after starting the route in Ilanz - the first town on the Rhine - the steep and challenging ascent on the old Flonder road to Flond begins. From there, you continue less steeply on forest roads to Surcuolm and finally up to the Bündner Rigi. After this exertion of nearly 1000 meters of elevation gain, it is worth recharging energy on the sun terrace of the mountain restaurant and enjoying the unique view of the Rhine Gorge and surrounding mountains. After the well-deserved break, the descent first goes along a flowing singletrail to the Sogn Carli chapel, which gave this route its name. Alternating on singletrails and gravel roads, the descent then continues down to Morissen and further to Vella. To manage the last two climbs via Cumbel to Sassolas, it is worthwhile to refill your water bottles at the village fountain or store in Vella. Upon reaching Sassolas, the last descent on beautiful singletrails awaits you to Luven and further down to Ilanz, the start and finish of this scenic yet quite demanding route.
Hidden Gem
Shorten the route and treat yourself to a PostBus ride from Ilanz to Surcuolm. This saves you about 670 sweat-inducing meters of elevation.
Safety Note
If the weather conditions are uncertain, the route should not be started. Weather changes in the mountains are frequent. If a rain front or similar rises during the route, you should turn back in good time.
