Description

Giovanni Segantini " The painter of light "

Giovanni Segantini's atelier is located in Maloja, the alpine village where the famous painter and his family lived from 1894 until his death. The small round building is located opposite the Schweizerhaus, at the start of the path leading to the Torre Belvedere, directly adjacent to the "Chalet Kuoni", the Segantini family residence.

The atelier, designed by Segantini himself, is a wooden, small-scale reproduction of what was to meant to be the Engadine pavilion at the 1900 Paris World's Fair: a round building 70 metres in diameter, designed by the artist himself. The walls of the pavilion were to contain a gigantic 220-metre-long pictorial representation of the landscape of Bregaglia and the Engadine. However, the work remained unfinished, but the Triptych of Nature (or of the Alps) was born from it. Three paintings that sum up Giovanni Segantini's artistic life and can now be admired in the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz.
