Axenstein castle ruins, Obersaxen

Show all 7 images

On the municipal border between Obersaxen Mundaun and Breil/Brigels, near the hamlet of the same name, are the remains of the former Axenstein Castle, also known as Saxenstein.
Description
They are concealed by bushes on a rocky elevation. The tower has walls between 1.65 and 2.40 m thick and was surrounded by a curtain wall, remains of which are also visible. There are no documents about the origins of Axenstein. These only appear in the 15th century, although the castle was already built in the 13th century. As with Moregg, Axenstein will also have been the seat of a Rhaetian ministerial.
