Burgruine Axenstein, Obersaxen
Show all 7 images
At the municipal boundaries between Obersaxen Mundaun and Breil/Brigels, near the hamlet of the same name, rise the remains of the former Axenstein Castle, also called Saxenstein.
Description
They stand, hidden by bushes, on a rocky elevation. The tower has a wall thickness between 1.65 and 2.40 m and was surrounded by a ring wall, of which remains are also visible. No documents report on the origin of Axenstein. These only appear in the 15th century, although the castle was built in the 13th century. As with Moregg, Axenstein will have been the seat of a Rhaeen ministerial.
