Cavaione is a settlement scattered on a steep slope that extends from 1,200 to 1,500 m.s.l.m. on the right side of the Valposchiavo.
Description
It was used for spring grazing by the inhabitants of Tirano before being permanently inhabited since the eighteenth century. During the nineteenth century, the inhabitants of Cavaione were in fact stateless due to an imprecise delimitation of the borders and therefore did not have to pay any tax. It was not until 1874 that the hundred villagers acquired Swiss citizenship. Cavaione thus becomes the last village to join Switzerland.
