Adventure trail and museum in a quarry at the back of the Fextal

Description

Mining activities in the "gianda da las plattas" area near the Sils Alps can be documented as early as the mid-19th century. The importance of the Fexer slabs was based on their ability to be split very thinly, up to approximately 15 mm thick. This made them ideal for roofing due to their weight savings. The stone – a gneiss (mineral-rich mica schist) – could only be split in the winter when frozen. This provided some men from the nearby Val Malenco and Sils with a modest but welcome income. Today, the Fexer slabs are highly sought after, especially for their beautiful colors. **Adventure Trail**: Tour with information points (QR codes), mid-June - October, duration approximately 45 minutes, sturdy shoes required, free of charge. **Guided tours/museum visits:** Every Tuesday from June 10, 2025 – October 14, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. Registration by 11:00 a.m. at Sils Tourist Information, Tel. 081 838 50 50. **Cost:** Adults CHF 15.00, children up to 16 years free. **Getting there:** On foot from Sils (90 minutes), by bike, or horse-drawn carriage.
