Bilderdecke Kirche St. Martin
The church of St. Martin in Zillis is also known as the "Sistine Chapel of the Alps" with its 12th century worldwide unique painted wooden ceiling and is one of the most important cultural assets in the Beverin Nature Park.

Description

This work, the only one still preserved in the world today, was created in the Romanesque period - at the beginning of the 12th century. The church ceiling consists of 153 square panels (nine rows of 17 panels each), each around 90 centimetres long.

The border panels depict strange mythical creatures symbolising evil as well as scenes from the story of Jonah. Angels are also arranged as personifications of the four winds and heralds of the Last Judgement. The inner pictures are dedicated to themes from the life of Christ. The last row of pictures tells of the life of St Martin.

It is definitely worth visiting the church exhibition first and then the church. The exhibition is located on the main street, just a 5-minute walk from the church. The exhibition uses contemporary museological methods to help visitors understand the church ceiling and medieval imagery.
