Giovanni Segantini - Painting location ‘Life’

Giovanni Segantini - Mahlstandort ``Werden´´ (oua_30692748_image)
Giovanni Segantini is considered a great innovator of Alpine painting and an important representative of fin-de-siècle symbolism. His work "Life - La vita", the first part of the Alpine Triptych, was created at this location.

Description

"Life - La vita" shows the landscape near Soglio in the Bergell valley on the Plan Luder high plateau in the setting sun. The Sciora group can be seen in the background on the left and the Bondasca glacier on the right. The viewer's gaze is drawn by the descending path to the mother and child, the actual center of the picture. The mother seems to have grown together with the pine tree and Segantini said that the picture represents "[...] the life of all things that have their roots in Mother Nature." The branches of the tree reach up into the sky. They represent a connection between earth and sky, from which the viewer's gaze is directed down the slope of the mountain on the right to the two women on the path.
