Description
The wall was built on a rocky terrace above the River Maira to protect the old road. At the same time, it was also the political border between the territories of Sottoporta and Sopraporta, which belonged to the bishops of Como and Chur respectively. The name "Porta" refers to the natural narrow point with the fortified customs station and comes from the name "Porta Bergalliae", which is mentioned together with the castle in the imperial Rhaetian archives in 840.
Nossa Donna and the Castelmur fortification
If you drive from Stampa towards the border, you will see the silhouette of the church known as Nossa Donna and the mighty square tower on the hill in the middle of the valley before Promontogno. This tower dates back to the 14th century and is a remnant of the feudal castle Castelmur, which was built a century before the tower and of which little remains. In the Middle Ages, Bregaglia was a single parish under the diocese of Chur. Nossa Donna was the main church in the valley. In 1845-50, Giovanni Castelmur, the Baron of Coltura, had it rebuilt on the old foundations without the Romanesque bell tower.
