This building tells of a new chapter in history

Splügens. While most of the houses in the village are several centuries old

, the school building was not built until the end of the 1960s. Back then

Splügen changed fundamentally. The construction of the San Bernardino Tunnel

brought new transport connections, new guests and new

Future prospects. The school building was designed by the Graubünden architect

Gaudenz Domenig. Unlike the historic buildings

it is not possible to copy old forms. Instead, it shows a modern

architectural language with clear lines, large ribbon windows and a

functional organization. Nevertheless, the building takes into account its

Surroundings. It was deliberately built outside the historic village centre

and forms the prelude to this new quarter. The multi-purpose building

houses the municipal administration, a community hall and originally

also a troop accommodation for the military. The building stands for the

Optimism of the post-war period: Many people believed in

Progress, mobility and economic growth. The school building is a reminder

to this day, this dawn of a new era and creates a public

Place between Alt- and Neusplügen.
