Deep in the Vals valley, a side valley of Surselva south of Ilanz, at an altitude of 1,250 metres, lies Vals. Its centre is still characterised by original Walser houses covered by slates made from Walser quartzite. The former municipality of Tinizong-Rona was formed on 1 July 1998 from the merger of the two villages Tinizong and Rona. Since 2016, the village belongs to the municipality of Surses.
