Out and about on lonely paths in Eastern Switzerland

  • Mountain hikes on the border with Bregaglia
  • Fantastic mountains in Graubünden
  • Comfort hotel Chesa Lanz in the mountain village of Bivio
  • Traditional Swiss dishes and in the evening in the sauna
  • Historic pass crossings on the watershed of Europe

"If you cross the Alps on old paths, you can feel the millennia under your feet..." The mountain landscape around Bivio allows for beautiful and lonely hikes, surrounded by the steep mountain giants of the Upper Engadine. You will enjoy the silence and enjoy the green, high alpine nature around the Graubünden mountain village of Bivio. Your hikes lead over historic pass crossings, over a geological hiking trail, to high moors and fens to the watershed of Europe. Flora and fauna are unique. And with a light daypack, you can hike twice as well. If you also like it cosy, you can relax after the atmospheric hiking days with a sauna session or in the steam bath.

Description

Planned program schedule

(Meals: B=Breakfast L=Lunch D=Dinner)

Day 1: Meeting point in Bivio at the Chesa Lanz

Meeting point is at the Hotel Post/Chesa Lanz in Bivio (1,769 m) at 6:00 p.m. At our dinner together we will discuss the course of the upcoming mountain hiking week.

Casa Lanz (A)

Day 2: Valletta da Beiva

Our first day of hiking starts right behind the hotel and takes us into the Valletta da Beiva. A good path leads us above the valley to the Stallerberg (2,581m). From there we cross the flat ridge 'Uf da Flüe' (2,774), which opens up a view down to Juf (2,117 m), the highest settlement in Europe that is inhabited all year round. Then it goes over some serpentines briefly very steeply down into the Vallettascharte and from there over the beautiful Columban Lake and almost endless, soft alpine meadows back to Bivio.

Day 3: One of the oldest crossings in the Alps

The Septimer Pass was considered one of the most important Alpine crossings in Roman times. Emperors, kings, armies and merchants already saw the advantage of a direct north-south connection and the favourable terrain formation. Finds of Roman centrifugal leads testify to the stay of Roman soldiers on the Septimer, possibly during the Alpine campaign (15 BC). What was once a laborious Alpine crossing can now be easily hiked with our mountain hiking guide. Enjoy a breathtaking day of hiking. Take the bus from Casaccia (1,458 m) back to Bivio.

Day 4: The only triple watershed in Europe

From Bivio we hike south to the Septimer Pass (2,310m). Here we turn sharply left and follow the hiking trail to the Lunghin Pass (2,645m). On the Piz Lunghin on the border of Surses, Bergell and Engadine, a raindrop is open to three oceans. This is a curiosity throughout Europe. If it flows north, it ends in the North Sea. If chance drives the drop eastwards, it ends up in the Danube and thus in the Black Sea. But it is also possible that the drop flows westwards and finally ends up in the Adriatic Sea. Wherever you go, a unique place. From up here we can see the Bernina massif with its highest peak, the Piz Bernina (4,049m), the only four-thousand-metre peak in the Eastern Alps. Finally, it is only down to Maloja and with the post bus back to the hotel.

Day 5: Oasis of silence in Val Faller

In the Val Faller natural forest reserve, nature is in charge: a forest area of 31 hectares has not been managed for forestry for a very long time and has not been grazed by livestock. Thus, nature can develop freely. The aim is to preserve the local larch forest and protect rare animal and plant species. We hike to this plateau, directly from Bivio, at almost 2,000 meters and visit the former, year-round inhabited Walser settlement. The three hamlets of Arnoz, Plang and Tga were abandoned as early as the 18th century, but were still used for some time in the snow-free season. From up here, we also have a direct view of the Piz Platta (3,392 m), which is considered the most beautiful mountain of this mountain range and is also known as the Graubünden Matterhorn. Then continue to Mulegns and take the post bus back to Bivio.

Day 6: Alp Flix, impressive terrace and high moors of national importance

Above Sur lies Alp Flix, a man-made jewel. The area was cleared by the Walsers in the 16th century and used as a place of residence; this is how this large alp was created, which is still inhabited and farmed all year round today. The high plateau of Alp Flix enchants with the endless mountain slopes of the surrounding peaks. Fat and dry meadows "interlock" with mountain forest, high and low moors form a diverse mosaic with mountain lakes. We hike from Bivio over Alp Natons (1,963m) and on over the Kanonensattel (2,241m) into the impressive landscape of Alp Flix. The way back leads to the village of Sur. The post bus takes us to our hotel.
