Reading from the novel: “The Secret of Silent Sounds” by Dagmar Dusil The story takes place in the second half of the 20th century and sheds light on the difficult living conditions in Romania during that time. At the center are two women: the star pianist Lavinia and her daughter Clara, who was given up for adoption at birth. Both share a passion for piano playing, yet they remain unaware of each other for a long time. Clara, at the age of fifteen, is severely injured during a staging by the Romanian secret police Securitate at a talent competition and initially abandons her dream of a musical career to become a doctor. Nevertheless, she continues to work quietly on her piano playing. In the dramatic finale of the novel, mother and daughter meet for the first time. Voices about the book: The truth is suddenly no longer the truth. Therefore, it is necessary to draw a line, to bring something to a close, to save oneself from the past as from a burning house, at the risk of burning oneself, and to take with you everything that has been dear to you until now and to hurt it.
