COLIN VALLON TRIO · Samares
Description

Samares is the new album by the Colin Vallon Trio. Samares are seeds with a wing-like appendage that facilitates dispersal by the wind, such as maple or ash. Like winged fruits, the songs of the album also spread and develop, taking unexpected turns as if they had suddenly been caught by a gust of wind. They carry worlds full of possibilities, which the three musicians explore and capture in a solid core. They interweave their unique personalities and weave a dense roof of beautiful music. Deeply rooted and yet branched outwards, these songs develop sometimes gently, with the patience of the growing, sometimes violently, in stormy outbursts of energy. They speak of roots and seeds, of belonging and continuity. They shine in a warm light that casts long shadows.
In addition to two trio projects, the Lausanne pianist Colin Vallon is also pursuing a career as a composer and has written the music for Martin Zimmermann's pieces One, Two, Three and Danse Macabre. He won the 3rd prize at the Montreux International Jazz Piano Solo Competition and was nominated for the Swiss Music Prize in 2016.
Patrice Moret from Aigle is classically trained as a double bass player. He recorded several albums, including with Thierry Lang, with whom he released an album on Bluenote. Since 2004 he has been a member of Colin Vallon's trio. He has also been a long-time member of Nicolas Masson's quartet and Elina Duni's quartet, with whom – as well as Vallon – created various albums for ECM.
Drummer Julian Sartorius is the winner of the Swiss Music Prize. Until 2010 he belonged to Sophie Hunger's band and has been performing internationally with them again for several years. He was a member of Co Streiff's group, among others. In 2013 he founded the Sartorius Drum Ensemble (with Lionel Friedli, Peter Conradin Zumthor and Arno Troxler). He has also played with musicians such as Matthew Herbert, Sylvie Courvoisier and Fred Frith. In 2023, a portrait of him appeared on SRF.
