Event San Bernardino Mesolcina Calanca
Conferenza sull'attualità archelogica Ticinese
Description
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Moesano Museum Foundation is pleased to announce that on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 8:00 p.m., at the Museum’s headquarters in San Vittore, the traditional evening dedicated to current archaeological developments in Ticino will take place.
This year, Moira Morinini Pè, head of the Archaeology Service at the Office of Cultural Heritage, will present the results of the Castel Grande 1984–1985 project, an international collaborative effort that once again demonstrates just how rich, diverse, and worthy of recognition the archaeological heritage of the Canton of Ticino is.
The San Michele hill, on which the medieval fortress of Castel Grande in Bellinzona stands, was the site of two preliminary excavation campaigns conducted in 1984 and 1985 in connection with the renovation of the Arsenale, built in 1820. Under the direction of the then Cantonal Office of Historical Monuments, these investigations revealed the existence of a large depression that had trapped and protected the remains of prehistoric and protohistoric settlements.
Forty years after the excavations, the study of archival materials, the numerous artifacts discovered—over 3,000 objects, mostly pottery and stone tools—and the structures attributable to periods ranging from the Early Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age has resulted in a publication.
Coordinated by the Cantonal Archaeological Service, the research was conducted by Samuel van Willigen (formerly of the Swiss National Museum), Domenico Lo Vetro (Florentine Museum and Institute of Prehistory / University of Florence), Cristian Scapozza (SUPSI), and Maruska Federici-Schenardi (Briva sagl / Moesano Museum), who will provide a more detailed presentation of the artifacts and structures (particularly a kiln for firing pottery) dating to the Bronze Age during the evening event.
No registration is required. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served afterward.
