Exactly 500 years ago, the Free State of the Three Leagues issued an important decree that enshrined religious freedom within its territory, albeit within a bi-confessional system. This decree has gone down in history as the Articles of Ilanz (1526). The Pgi Valposchiavo intends to commemorate this anniversary with the conference “500 Years of Freedom of Belief: The Articles of Ilanz—The European Significance of a Graubünden Event (1526–2026),” to be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, in Poschiavo. The conference aims to provide an opportunity for in-depth exploration and understanding of the current state of research and scholarship on this first legal framework—covering both political and ecclesiastical matters—that the State of the Three Leagues adopted following the Union Pact of 1524.
