Gian Marchet Colani - Der Freischütz - Eine Bündner Jäger-Oper

Description

Hunting is a major topic not only in the Engadine, but in the whole of Graubünden. To conclude the hunting season, Opera Engiadina will produce a veritable Graubünden hunters' opera in October 2026 under the patronage of the Bünder Jägerverband. Carl Maria von Weber's famous opera "Der Freischütz" serves as a model. The plot (scenario by Claudio Danuser and Manfred Ferrari) is tailored to the "King of Bernina", the legendary Engadine hunter Gian Marchet Colani from Pontresina (1772 – 1835), who was said to have shot with bewitched bullets, which corresponds exactly to the free bullets in "Freischütz" as a motif. At the centre of the opera are the famous Wolfsschlucht scene, which will take place here in the Ova da Bernina gorge near Pontresina, as well as the popular hunters' choir, sung for the first time in Rhaeto-Romanic by Engadine and Graubünden hunters.
