The climate crisis is hitting Switzerland with increasingly frequent and intense heat waves. Without a fundamental change of course in politics and business, summer temperatures of up to 50 °C are looming by the middle of the century. That is why organisations are calling for climate demonstrations throughout Switzerland in September – in German-speaking Switzerland, the demonstrations will take place on 25 September.
The hot summer of 2026 has made the consequences of the climate crisis unmistakable in Switzerland as well: unbearable temperatures at workplaces and in classrooms, overburdened emergency rooms, heat deaths, health risks for the elderly, children and the chronically ill. In addition, there is the enormous impact on nature and significant burden on agriculture with crop failures, drought and premature descents from alpine pastures.
We need effective protective measures now: massive greening of our cities, climate-resilient buildings, especially schools and public facilities, adapted working and teaching hours and a ban on working outdoors in extreme heat. Heat protection is health protection and a fundamental right.
At the same time, the causes of the crisis must be tackled decisively. The current heat wave is a direct consequence of the climate crisis and decades of dependence on fossil fuels. Nevertheless, Switzerland is missing its climate targets, cutting back on climate protection and continuing to expand fossil fuel infrastructure. Far-reaching changes are needed to quickly reduce emissions in all sectors.
The climate crisis is also a crisis of justice. People in the Global South suffer the most from its consequences, even though they have contributed the least to it. At the same time, Switzerland contributes disproportionately to the climate crisis through its financial centre, commodity trading and multinational corporations. That is why we need a socially just transformation and a fundamental change in our economic and social system that combines climate protection, social security and global responsibility.
