Valentin Grüner is leaving his home country for a life as a gamekeeper in southern Africa. Once there, he is sobered to find that most animal sanctuaries pursue commercial purposes and have little to do with wilderness. He wants to do things differently. But fate leaves him no time for theory, but confronts him with the brutal practice: a lion cub is rejected by its mother. Should he save it and raise it or leave it to certain death? It was a decision that turned his life upside down and still has a significant impact today, 15 years later.

The Kalahari is an oasis of life. During the day, you can watch wild lions, leopards, antelopes, wildebeests, zebras and giraffes roam the endless savannah. At night, the Milky Way spans the sky and the eyes of the big cats shine out of the grasslands. Against this magical backdrop, a deeply emotional story develops between man and animal, between Valentin Grüner and the lioness Sirga. But the gamekeeper's vision is a bigger one: ancient ways of herding animals will be restored, bringing back hundreds of thousands of wildebeests, zebras and antelopes and leading to the largest contiguous lion population in Africa. To this end, fences are being torn down, water points are being built and joint solutions are being sought with livestock breeders and authorities to protect the wilderness and the local population.
