MARINA CYRINO

Marina Cyrino is a Brazilian flutist based in Berlin. Her music is characterized by the use of a hyper-amplification system, with microphones positioned inside the flute, combined with a wide variety of DIY preparations, objects, toys, and balloons attached to the instrument. Kaleidoscopic rhythmic patterns and the use of disassembled flute parts are striking elements of her playing. By removing the flute's headjoint and replacing it with various sound-producing objects, she radically alters the flute's primary sound-producing mechanism. Sometimes fabrication, sometimes deconstruction, sometimes fabulation, these techniques emerge from a search for a radical reimagining of what a flute could sound. Part chicken, part human, part monstrous, her "Frankenstein flutes" are assemblages of entangled embodiments guided by joy, humor, and the absurd.
