Description
The Pass Diesrut and the Greina Pass were already used as crossings in the Bronze Age and, especially in the Middle Ages, were well-known mule tracks. Be surprised by the diverse plant life! Along the way, you can observe marmots and, with some luck, chamois and ibex.
Stage 1: From Vrin to Capanna Scaletta
At the beginning, you walk about 3 km along the road towards the hamlets of Cons, Ligiaziun, and Sogn Giusep. From Sogn Giusep, a hiking trail leads up to Camplun and Puzzatsch. This section can be shortened by the alpine bus from the end of June to early October.
Reservation is absolutely necessary: schedule and info.
Now the actual ascent into the Greina begins. After a short stretch on the gravel road, the path winds past the Alpstallungen of Tegia Sut up to Pass Diesrut. Steeper sections alternate with long ascents. Shortly after the pass height, the view opens up onto the wide Greina plain with the meandering Rein da Sumvitg. After about 5 minutes, the hiking trail branches left towards Passo della Greina. The path gently descends into the plain interwoven with river arms. The route continues through the Greina plain with its numerous swamps, extensive sheep pastures, and impressive mountain backdrops. Depending on the weather, you experience the most impressive light effects of sun, fog, and clouds. In the area of Passo della Greina, the yellowish-white Rauhwacken towers delight, and suddenly you can feel the geological contrasts in the colors: in the north are the crystalline rocks of the Gotthard massif; adjacent are the bright dolomites and Rauhwacken from the Triassic, and south of that are the black shale of the Coroi series (Jurassic). From the pass, it is only about 30 minutes to Capanna Scaletta.
