Description

The ascent path leads to a rocky plain (approx. 2140m), where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Morteratsch glacier, its moraines and the surrounding mountains. The glacier is right at your feet and the elemental force of Piz Bernina (4048m), Bellavista (3922m) and Crast' Agüza (3870m) can be felt up close. There is usually a cool breeze here; if you want to enjoy the view of the glacier world for longer, take a jacket with you even in summer.

The new mountain hiking trail (since summer 2023) was created because the glacier had retreated more and more. Thanks to the ascent path, access to the Morteratsch glacier is possible again - even without alpine experience. The marked path ends in front of the glacier tongue; entering the glacier is only recommended with a mountain guide and appropriate equipment.

If you want to walk the new trail, you first have to take the Morteratsch glacier trail under your feet or pedals, an easy hiking trail, wide and suitable for prams. In contrast, the ascent path requires surefootedness and some mountain mobility. The ascent leads through a small rock couloir and the ground is sometimes slippery. Good shoes are highly recommended.
