Description

The Bernina route offers wonderful views of all glaciers in the Bernina massif. The route leads from the Mediterranean Poschiavo over the Bernina Pass and the Diavolezza to Pontresina, further up to Fuorcla Surlej with views of the Biancograt, Piz Bernina and Piz Roseg, and down to Sils with views over the Engadine lake landscape. From Sils, it goes along the Via Engadina to Maloja.

The start is in Poschiavo at 1021 meters above sea level and follows the UNESCO World Heritage route of the Rhaetian Railway to the Bernina Pass at 2328 m, via the glacial garden of Cavaglia with its glacial mills and Alp Grüm with a first view of the eastern side of the Bernina massif. A break on a level and wide path along Lake Bianco relaxes the muscles for the further 1,000 vertical meters up to Munt Pers at 3207 meters, where a fantastic view of the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers awaits.

Back at the Diavolezza mountain station, the path leads down past the Lej da Diavolezza to the valley station. After crossing the main road, the steep ascent to Fuorcla Pischa at 2835 m begins. On the descent to Pontresina, there are refreshment options at Chamanna Paradies (detour) and at Restaurant Alp Languard. After leaving the mountaineering village of Pontresina, you enter the lovely Val Roseg at the height of the train station. In front of the Hotel Restaurant Val Roseg, the path turns right and climbs up to Fuorcla Surlej with views to Lej da Vadret and the Biancograt of Piz Bernina on the left. After Fuorcla Surlej, the wide path leads to the mid-station of the Corvatsch cable car. The path continues a little steeply down and then traverses the mountain slope to Alp Prasüra and down to the cultural village of Sils. Past the church of Sils Baselgia and up to the famous Via Engiadina. After leaving the picture-perfect Heidi village Grevasalvas behind, the destination in Maloja is just a stone’s throw away.

Detour: from Sils, hike along Lake Silser and continue to Isola and further to Maloja. Those who want can also take the boat from Sils boathouse and travel comfortably to Maloja.

If you plan to use a cable car for the descent, check the timetable in advance, that you don't miss the last cable car that leaves for the valley.

Safety Note

There can still be snow at higher altitudes in June.

Mobile phone reception cannot be guaranteed everywhere in the mountains.

Equipment

Good, sturdy hiking boots, clothes suitable for the weather, sun and rain protection, enough food and drinking water, first aid kit, a good map.
