Der "Tunnelweg" im Safiental

Mountain bikers are rarely thrilled by asphalt roads. The climb to Alp Sura above Bonaduz is a commendable exception - the fantastic view of the Surselva and the Chur Rhine Valley more than makes up for not riding on single trails.

Description

From the start in Safien, Carfil, we send you down immediately to the small artificial Egschi Lake and then on a varied and special tunnel section on the right side of the valley. Comparisons with the "Old Schin" between Thusis and Lenzerheide are quite appropriate. A few narrow and wide single trails alternate with long, enjoyable gravel roads. The dark tunnels and the impressive views into the depths of the Rabiusa river are unique in the Safien valley. Stopping and enjoying here is virtually mandatory.

Now follow 800 meters of altitude on the road to Alp Sura. After about two-thirds of the route, you can treat yourself to a snack at Alp Il Bot during the summer season - which can be quite motivating.

Alp Sura is the start for crossing the sunny slopes of the Heinzenberg. Often you can enjoy it on alp roads. But there are also longer, demanding trails. Sometimes horizontal, sometimes with exhausting short climbs. At the Maiensäss Parsiras stands the mountain inn Parsiras, inviting you to a refreshment break. As soon as you reach Pascuminersee, it is not far to Bischola Lake and the upcoming steep single trail descent back into the Safien valley. Those who want to refresh again can do so at Alpbeizli Bischola during the summer. The trail is partly flowing to ride, but also quite demanding in parts. Once back in the valley floor, the route leads over the partly demanding trail of the Walserweg back to the starting point by Egschi Lake.

Hidden Gem

In principle, you can also ride via the main road, through Versam and the Versam Gorge. However, the spectacular section described here on the right side of the valley is much more rewarding.

Tips for stops: Mountain Inn Parsiras, Alpbeizli Bischola

Those coming from Chur can also join the route above Bonaduz near Sigl Ault.

Safety Note

In uncertain weather conditions, the route should not be attempted. Weather changes in the mountains are common. If a rain front or something similar approaches during the route, you should turn back in time.
