Description

We start with a few easy meters along the south shore of the Lai da Sontga Maria, the reservoir at Lukmanier Pass. At the end of the lake, we turn right and follow the hut trail to Capanna Cadlimo. The first 300 meters of elevation gain are still steep, but then they level out evenly, allowing us to quickly find our rhythm and enjoy the lonely valley with the picturesque wetlands. At the Cadlimo hut, we have reached the first "highlight" of the route. Perfect for a break with coffee and cake. But keep your eyes open, especially in autumn, ibexes are often observed from the hut’s terrace.

From the hut, a short descent into Val Canaria requires our concentration before we branch off to the north and return to Graubünden via Passo Bornengo. We only briefly get distracted by the original stone men colony at Maighel Pass height, as we rest again at the clear blue Lai Urlaun below Maighelshütte.

It goes uphill again, after 30 minutes we reach Lake Toma, the source of the Rhine. However, until we reach the highest point of our round, the Pazzolastock, we still have to push ourselves a bit. But we are rewarded with a dream view of the Surselva and the Urner Alps. The descent over Las Puozzas is very easy, and at Oberalp Pass, we are greeted by the highest lighthouse and two restaurants, where we can pass the time until the train departs for Disentis.

Variant: After Lake Toma directly to Oberalp Pass

Safety Note

In July, there may still be snow at Bronengo Pass. see webcam: www.maighelshuette.ch

Directions

We follow the signposted hiking trail to the Cadlimo hut. After the hut, a descent and ascent are signposted with Oberalp Pass and Maighelshütte. Continue downstream at the stone men in Val Maighels. At the height of Maighelshütte, we branch off onto the Four Springs Trail No. 49. At the lake, we can either go straight up to the Badus hut or make a detour around the lake. From Badus hut, we follow the hiking trail to Pazzolastock and to Oberalp Pass.
