The 6000 km long European Columbanus Trail passes through nine countries. From Ireland via England, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Principality of Liechtenstein to Italy. The Columbanus Trail follows as a memorial path the footsteps of the Irish monks Columbanus († 615) and Gallus († around 640/645) as well as their companions. They and their successors gave significant impulses to Christianity and thus to culture on the European continent from the late 6th century onwards. Around one hundred monastery foundations are associated with Columbanus and his students. Besides a return to the cultural, spiritual, and monastic heritage, it also stands for a message of peace and cohesion in Europe.

Description

21 stages and 500 km from Basel to Castasegna near Chiavenna make up the Swiss part of the international cultural route «Via Columbani». The Columbanus Trail Switzerland leads on well-developed hiking trails and also cycling routes through picturesque landscapes such as Fricktal, Limmattal, Toggenburg, Fürstenland, Rheintal, Sarganserland and Albula, along rivers like Rhine, Aare and Limmat and lakes like Lake Zurich and Lake Constance and through many historic places with spiritual power. Specifically associated with the Swiss cultural route is also the natural medicine brought forth by monasteries since the early Middle Ages. Gesundheitsland Switzerland - www.gesundheitsland.ch - connects its actors and makes the diverse possibilities for natural health care in Switzerland visible and tangible.
