Description

This ambitious tour masters the ascent into the Tamina Valley on the former access road, which is closed to motorized traffic. Passing the hamlets of Balen and Gassaura, the imposing Tamina Bridge, an arched bridge with a span of 270 m on the opposite side of the valley to Pfäfers, is a sight to behold. Valens is home to a rehabilitation center that is one of the leading rehabilitation clinics in Switzerland and specializes in the treatment of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. The road leads steadily up and down to the catchment basin of the Mapragg reservoir, which we follow along the western shore. A varied single trail leads us on to Vättis, from where the ascent starts to the Gigerwald reservoir and the Walser settlement of St. Martin, a mysterious hamlet at the back of the Calfeisental dating back to the 14th century. The descent follows easy hiking trails, gravel and tarred roads back to the Tamina Therme Bad Ragaz.

Hidden Gem

The Mapragg and Gigerwald reservoirs form the Tamina Valley pumped storage plant and draw water from the Weisstannen, Calfeisen and Tamina valleys.

Equipment

Normal bike equipment. Functional clothing is an advantage, as ascents and descents alternate.
