Description
We start the circular route in the well-known spa town of Bad Ragaz and on the way pass through the villages of Vilters, Wangs, Mels, Plons, Heiligkreuz, and Sargans before riding back along the Rhine to the starting point. The leisurely route involves hardly any altitude gain. Only during the climb to Sargans Castle do we overcome 100 meters of elevation. On the way to Sargans, a stop in Mels is recommended to visit its newly designed village square, the Rathauskeller, and the characteristic Nidberg hill with vineyards. After continuing through the Melser settlements of Plons and through the vineyards of Heiligkreuz, we arrive at the old town of Sargans. Above the historic town proudly towers the widely visible Sargans Castle. From the old town, a staircase leads directly on foot up to Sargans Castle. However, with an e-bike, we can also approach the castle from behind via a wide road.
Once at the top, we are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view. The castle stands at the foot of Mount Gonzen, whose lower slopes host numerous hectares of vines, including the Gonzen winery, whose fine trophies mature in barrique barrels in the nearby Gonzen mine. Not only is the wine cellar located in the mountain, but the Gonzenbergwerk restaurant also welcomes its guests underground.
For the return to Bad Ragaz, we first ride on the Rhine dike and then upstream until the Fläscher bridge, where we turn and soon arrive back at our starting point.
