Description
The La Niva nature forest reserve lies above Savognin at the foot of Piz Mitgel. On the dry, poor dolomite scree ground, 70 percent are mountain pines. Spruces make up only 29 percent of the tree population. Due to the harsh environmental conditions, they are at their distribution limit and do not nearly reach the height of 50 meters that they can achieve at lower altitudes. Where the forest becomes increasingly sparse upwards, the black grouse feels at home. The lekking sites are located on the open spots above the treeline, used again year after year.
La Niva is accessible on foot from Savognin in about 1.5 hours or once a week on Wednesdays by the hiking bus. A visit can also be ideally combined with a hike on the Motta Palousa, with views into the Albula valley and Surses.
Plang la Curvanera can be reached by bike and hiking bus or by car. Further information is available under the "Getting there" section.
