Description
On the southeastern flank of Piz Beverin lies the Schamserberg. The winter hiking trail starts at the entrance to Mathon. It leads through the forest, past the tipi tent and on to the dreamy mountain pasture Nutschias. Above the tree line, open, flat terrain is reached, ideal for a rest: Lots of sun and a magnificent view of Muttner Horn, Piz Curvér, Piz la Tschera and Surettahorn await winter hikers here. Past the idyllic mountain pasture huts of Dros, it goes via the tipi tent and through the forest back to the dreamy mountain village of Mathon.
While almost only German is spoken in the valley, in the hamlets of Muntogna da Schons (Schamserberg) the Romansh language (Sutsilvan) predominates. This is also the case in Mathon, where the birthplace of the well-known Romansh songwriter Tumasch Dolf (1889 - 1963) is located. Those who have time for a walk through the village before or after the hike should not miss the two churches. The St. Antonius Church, preserved from decay, was built around 1200. The second and youngest church on the Schamserberg impresses with its organ, which is painted with floral motifs. Mathon is also called the "vischnaunca dils buons zenns," the village with the good bells. Depending on wind and weather, the sound of the 1528-cast bell of Mathon spreads across the entire Val Schons.
Information on the condition of the winter hiking trails on the Schamserberg can be found here.
